The situation on the Korean Peninsula is the most dangerous since the Korean War as multiple conflicts have erupted around the world. In recognition of International Women’s Day, join a webinar with two renowned feminist scholar-activists whose work sheds light on the gendered impact of the Korean War and the role of women to advance peace and justice. Suzy Kim, Professor of Korean History at Rutgers University, will provide a historical account of how North Korean and international women intervened during the Korean War based on her 2023 book, Among Women Across World: North Korea in the Global Cold War. Na-Young Lee, a professor at Chung-Ang University, will provide insight on the impact of the ongoing war on South Korean women, including militarized sexual violence, and the efforts underway in South Korea to hold the ROK government and U.S. military accountable. Women Cross DMZ’s Echo Cho will provide an update of the organizing underway by the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network in the U.S. towards ending the Korean War. The event will be moderated by Northwestern University professor Ji-Yeon Yuh, Women Cross DMZ Board Member.

Every year, Korea Peace Advocacy Week brings together hundreds of people around the country to participate in meetings with their members of Congress to advocate for legislation supporting peace in Korea. Participants will join two or three half-hour online meetings via Zoom with staff from their Representative’s office, sharing personal stories and urging members to support H.R.1369, the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act. The registration deadline is March 1. An online training session will be offered for all participants the week of March 4. This year’s Korea Peace Advocacy Week is being organized by American Friends Service Committee, Korea Peace Now!, The United Methodist Church, and Women Cross DMZ. This is the ninth year of coordinated advocacy days for the cause of peace in Korea, and the fifth year of it being held online.

Last year, the US and South Korea signed the Washington Declaration, allowing American nuclear submarines to dock on the Korean peninsula for the first time in 40 years. The two administrations have also coordinated more closely with Japan, Korea’s former colonizer.

Meanwhile, North Korea remains under brutal sectoral sanctions, which have killed at least 4,000 people and disproportionately affected the country’s most vulnerable. As the Biden administration continues to isolate and threaten North Korea, CODEPINK is joined by Echo Cho, Women Cross DMZ’s Director and Coordinator of Activism and Special Campaigns, to put Pyongyang’s recent statements in context and discuss ways to de-escalate tensions in Northeast Asia.
